PT, PT, PT.

^ My life for the past few weeks. Running twice a day, lifting weights. We ran the IST course Friday morning and I ran the 1.5 miles in 12:57. Max time is 15 minutes. The last time I ran the course (Oct. 17), I ran it in 14:39, so I've cut 1 minute and 42 seconds off my time, so far. I have five more days to really push myself and train as much as possible. Sgt. Reynolds will be picking me up Sunday!

I've started watching Oz. I'm almost through the first season and I'm hooked.
My favorites are Miguel Alvarez and Donald Groves. O'Reily annoys me. I don't really care about Beecher. Who I thought would be my favorite ends up dying in the first episode. What the hell?

• Btw, you guys, MY UPLOADED MUSIC. I'll be deleting all of the files this Friday, so make with the grabby hands and go!

Also, zombres, do you have Milla's The Divine Comedy album? I know you're a fan and didn't know if you had it, but here it is in case you don't. :)

Milla Jovovich ~ The Divine Comedy

Talk to me, you guys!
Poolee Function, Working Out, & New Shipdate.

I haven't updated in two weeks! :(

(NEW) SHIPDATE
20091117

Sgt. Reynolds was able to get me my Aviation Support field, so hopefully I'll get my 6531 Aircraft Ordnance specialty during boot camp. In doing so, my shipdate has been moved up. So as of tomorrow, I have 20 days until I leave for Parris Island.

October Poolee Function
I passed the IST. We did crunches, flexed-arm hang, and the 1.5 mile run. I did the run in around 14 minutes. Max time is 15 minutes, so that's what I've been focusing on in training. After the IST, we went to a gymnasium and did circuit exercises. Before we left, GySgt. passed out certificates to new poolees.

__
Oh, and in case you guys like to put names with faces, here's some of the recruiters I've mentioned:

Sgt. Reynolds (my recruiter)
GySgt. Williams
Sgt. Fletcher
Sgt. Foster
SSgt. Hayes
__

Anddd...
Getting ready for recruit training. I've been getting together with Sgt. Reynolds and another poolee to work out in the mornings. Running, weight machines, that sort of thing. When we can't meet up, I've been going to the YMCA and using the treadmills, ellipticals, and some bicycle machine.

The only thing I'm really worried about (at this time) is running/passing the IST down at MCRD. I run fine on treadmills, but running on concrete is a different story. I've been running the Kanawha Boulevard, trying to get my knees and ankles used to the impact.

I'm sorry that I haven't had much to talk about other than my Marine Corps stuff. It's all I can think about these days.

Okay, so, Sgt. Reynolds picked me up at 1400 on Sunday (the 4th). We waited at the recruiting station with GySgt. Williams, Sgt. Foster, and two other kids (Donnie and Justin) until 2000 for Sgt. Fletcher and a kid who would also be going down to Beckley with us. While we waited (5 hours!), we watched some of 300, Old School (lol), and some Marine Corps commercials/promotional video. We got to the Holiday Inn around 2100 and were the last people to eat dinner. I had a hotdog and fries. I roomed with Donnie. In the morning, we woke up, packed, and went up to eat breakfast. After breakfast, we loaded onto the bus. There were considerably less people this time around.

Once at MEPS, I sat in the same seat in the waiting area for 5 hours (0700-1200) staring at a wall/watching Law & Order: CI. At 1200, we were told to go eat lunch. After lunch, activity picked up a bit. Myself, Donnie, and two boys went down a hallway and did our crunches and flexed-arm hang. I did 57 (military) crunches in 2 minutes and my flexed-arm hang time was 27 seconds. (Minimums: crunches - 55 | hang - 12 seconds) I'll need to work on those. To complete the IST, I'll have to run a mile or 1.5 miles (I'm not sure which) in a certain amount of time at the Poolee Function on the 17th.

After more waiting, I went in with Horvath (the liaison officer who drove me home from MEPS after my first trip/LOST addict*) and we went over my papers, my job options, and got a shipdate! More waiting. I was called back by a lady to answer official "Yes, I understand my contract," questions and fingerprinting. Wait, wait, wait. Swear in! I swore in, had my picture taken, and I was finished for the day.

*We spent the majority of the drive home talking about LOST. He told me to finish up the aired seasons so we could discuss when I go back down to ship out, lol.

Waited a bit for Donnie's paperwork to go through, and then sat and waited for Sgt. Reynolds to pick us up in what turned out to be the Marine Corps mini-van (funnier than it sounds). Before we left, we were given a shirt and a little tin box thing that contained a 'welcome' booklet with a bunch of lists of things to memorize, a training guide, and a couple bumper stickers.

SHIPDATE
20091216

We got back to the recruiting station around 1900 and Sgt. Foster briefed Donnie and myself on the Delayed Entry Program. We stuck push pins on a map, had our pictures taken, and were given a shirt.
.

So, I guess in a month or at the next Poolee Function, I'll be tested on the Enlisted Rank Structure and General Orders 1-4.

I'm in, guys!

Sgt. Reynolds picked me up at 12:00pm, we dropped by the Board of Education to pick up my transcripts from Hoover, and then headed back to the MCRS to do some preliminary paperwork and a basic urinalysis test. We left the MCRS around 3:30pm, stopped by McDonalds for some lunch, and headed down to Beckley.

We arrived at the Holiday Inn in Oak Hill around 5:00pm, signed in at the military office inside the hotel, and was assigned a room. My roommate (Liz) arrived about ten minutes after I did, and she said, "Let's go eat!", and so we did. I had a grilled cheese sandwich, fries, and a diet Coke. She's joining the National Guard and had already been to MEPS (and was back to swear-in), so she told me all about what I'd be doing the next day, which made me a lot less nervous. After dinner, she went out for a smoke break, invited me along, and then we called it a night.

Woke up, showered, went to breakfast. I had a hashbrown, a slice of bacon, and a little carton of orange juice. Everyone heading to MEPS that day was packed onto a big bus and driven to the Military Entrance Processing Station. Everyone got out, grabbed their bags, and lined up in front of the entrance. We walked through a metal detector, put our bags away, and lined up in rows of six in front of the main desk. I was one of four girls and maybe twenty guys. We had our photo taken, had our right and left index fingers fingerprinted (which was used to sign in/out of a room), and sent to Medical.

We walked back to Medical, signed/fingerprinted in, were given our medical files and waited in line for pulse/blood pressure, vision, hearing, and then we were herded into a room where we filled out our medical sheets (yes/no questions) and took a breathalyzer test. I passed everything so I was good to go. The nurse looked over everyone's papers to make sure everything was filled out and signed, and then we were sent on our way.

Next, I had blood taken. Just FYI, nurses have never been able to get blood out of my right arm. I probably should've mentioned this because she stuck my right arm and nothing came out, so she had a Navy man* try my left arm and that worked. I walked back into the waiting room with two band aids and I got a few laughs.
* I'm not sure what he was, but he wasn't wearing scrubs and had U.S. Navy insignia.

After that ordeal, the nurse took the four of us girls into the Female Ortho room which was a big open room with little stalls in the back and we were told to strip down to our bras and undies and then we did some silly exercises so the doctor could check our joints, reflexes, etc. Everyone, including the nurse and doctor, was laughing the whole time. The Duck Walk was hilarious. Even walking forward on our knees was too much, but we all passed, so that was fun. Then came the not-so-fun part. We were each taken, separately, into a little room and checked all over. I was surprisingly not too self-conscious and was unusually comfortable throughout the whole ortho checkup.

The only nerve-racking part of my first trip to MEPS was the urinalysis portion. It wasn't the fact that someone was going to watch me pee, but the fact that I cannot pee on command. So now it's 11:00am and medical is finished except for the pee-in-a-cup portion, and we have about an hour to pee before the medical area closes. The only liquid I had had that morning was a little 8oz. carton of orange juice at breakfast, so myself and another girl were probably the last ones left in the medical area, drinking lots of water and hopping around the common/waiting area. It took about 40 minutes and some poking of the bladder, but I was finally able to pee.

So after I peed in my little cup, I was sent to the USMC liaison office and the officer told me the last thing I needed to do was to take the AIMS test (Aptitude Inventory Measurement Service/a personality test for homeschooled/GED kids) and then I could go eat lunch. So he took me back to a little room, I took the test, reported back to the liaison office, and went to lunch. They were already packing everything up, so the lady handed me a bag marked "unconsumed" and I had about 10 minutes to eat my lunch. I had some kind of tuna salad sandwich, a diet Coke, a bag of chips, and an oatmeal cookie. I let the liaison officer know I was finished, waited a bit, and then he drove me home. I arrived home around 2:30pm.

Everyone working at the Beckley MEPS was nice and very funny. It was a positive experience. Three months ago, you couldn't even get me to walk up to someone and ask for help and now I'm enjoying myself. I'll be heading back to Beckley on the <s>30th</s> 4th to swear-in on the <s>1st</s> 5th.

AND

My ASVAB subtest line scores:

GT - 123
EL - 106
CL - 111
MM - 109

Requirements
2111 Small Arms Repair - MM 95
6531 Aircraft Ordnance - GT 105

I qualify for both of my top choices! Now we just need to see if any spots are available.

My AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) Score

AFQT scores are not raw scores, but rather percentile scores indicating how each examinee performed compared with all other examinees. Thus, someone who receives an AFQT of 55 scored better than 55 percent of all other examinees. - Wikipedia

My AFQT score was 74.

So that means I scored better than 74% of other test takers? I don't know, Sgt. said it was a good score. I know the qualifying minimum is somewhere between 30-40. Sgt. Reynolds said that I'll find out the results of my other subtests probably by the end of the week and we'll be able to see what jobs I qualify for then.

--

Sgt. picked me up at 4pm and we headed to the testing site. On the way, we talked (well, he talked, I listened) about what tv shows we watched. My Marine recruiter watches True Blood with his wife. :D So we talked about TB. He likes Lafayette. His wife has read all the books. He told me the differences so far between the books and the show that his wife told him.

The testing started at 5:30pm and we finished up around 8:30-9pm, so the whole thing lasted about three hours. I'd studied, so I felt prepared, but a lot of the questions were subpar to the level I'd studied for (math, for example), so I wasn't sure how I'd score.

On the ride home, I talked to GySgt. Williams and he asked me what MOS's I was interested in. I told him, "Small Arms Repair or Ammo Tech." Sgt. Reynolds' asked me again while we were doing some paperwork and I told him the same, "Small Arms Repair or Ammo Tech." "Ammo Tech, alright." It was odd, though, because they both latched on to Ammo Tech, even though I'd mentioned Small Arms Repair as my first choice. I don't know, we'll see. :)

It seems like I've been really busy lately, and yet haven't done much at all.

I visited the USMC recruiting station on Saturday the 5th. I answered a lot of general questions, completed a paper practice ASVAB which qualified me to enlist, and timed my flexed arm hang (which I passed). Then we set up a meeting with my recruiter, Sgt. Reynolds, for Tuesday the 8th. On Tuesday, we watched a video, asked a lot of questions, answered a lot of questions, and set up a meeting for my dad to meet with Sgt. Reynolds today (the 12th).

My mom has been so supportive, I love her for it. My dad has shown not disapproval, but a severe lack of interest, up until discussion of choosing an MOS (Military Occupational Specialty), and then he'll lecture about how I need to choose an MOS that I'll be able to use to my advantage after the Corps. I'll mention a MOS with maintainence or technician in the title and I'll get a good 20 minute response as to how I'll never use the knowledge gained later in life.

One MOS I'm really interested in is 2311 Ammunition Technician (or 6531 Aircraft Ordnance Technician). One I've been passively considering is 0621 Field Radio Operator. Obviously, I wouldn't be on the frontline as I do not have man parts, but it is open to women, so it's a possibility.

- For 2311, I'll need a GT score of 100, which is a combination of Arithmetic Reasoning and Verbal Expression (the sum of WK and PC).

- For 6531, I'll need a GT score of 105.

- For 0621, I'll need an EI score of 90, which is a combination of GS, AR, MK, and EI.

ASVAB subtests
Electronics Information (EI)
Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
General Science (GS)
Auto & Shop Information (AS)
Assembling Objects (AO)
Mechanical Comprehension (MC)
Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
Word Knowledge (WK)

Anyway, I'll be taking the ASVAB on Monday (the 14th), so I've got a lot of studying to do.

And hello to new friend, lovelysofar!

Zero, anywhere. (Or I suck at using a measuring tape.)

FROM WHERE IS THE WEIGHT LEAVING??

Week 1:

Kicked my butt. I was sore all over (literally) the whole week. It hurt to get out of bed. :( Had trouble eating all of the food they suggested, it was much more than I usually ate.

Week 2:

Much better, I feel good. I got off my sleep schedule this week, which is evident from my food diary, and is probably why I only lost 2 of the 10 lbs this week. No muscle soreness, apart from what is to be expected. I've started running several times throughout the week, too, mostly because I get bored during the day. My upper body strenght has gone from non-existent to awesome in just two weeks. And by 'awesome' I mean I can do push ups, whee.
